How We Work
"Our architect design process gives you a clear outline of the stages a project typically moves through, from the first site visit to support on site. Each stage can be tailored to suit your brief, budget, and timescales."
A clear path from vision to reality
Good architecture emerges from good process. Our structured approach to project delivery follows a clear, step-by-step design process, refined over years of practice, helping you stay informed and confident at every stage.
Commissioning architectural work can feel uncertain at the start. The stages below explain how our Farnham architect design process works, showing clearly what you can expect from us and when key decisions are needed. This clarity supports smoother projects, steadier budgets, and fewer surprises during design and construction.
Stage 0: Strategic Definition
Every project begins with clarity, and as architects working in Farnham and the surrounding area, our design process always starts with a thorough understanding of your site, budget, and ambitions. At this early stage, we focus on understanding your site, your aims, and any early constraints that may shape the project. A free initial consultation at the property, or via a discovery call allows us to discuss ideas in context, explore opportunities, and flag potential challenges from the outset.
We use this meeting to talk through planning considerations, scale, budget expectations, and timescales. We may produce sketch ideas to help visualise options, but the emphasis is on informed discussion rather than design commitment. Following this, we prepare a clear and detailed fee proposal setting out the scope of work and next steps, giving you confidence before making any appointment.
Stage 1: Preparation and Brief
Accurate information underpins good design. For this reason, we arrange a measured survey of the property, through trusted specialists, to make sure all drawings use reliable data.
We then meet with you to explore the feasibility of your project in detail. This includes discussing accommodation needs, priorities, planning policy context, budget ranges, and any site constraints. From these conversations we develop a clear design brief that guides all later work.
Stage 2: Concept Design
The concept design stage is where ideas begin to take shape. We develop a sketch scheme that responds to the brief, the site, and relevant planning considerations. This includes advice on what is likely to be acceptable in principle from a planning and technical point of view.
We consider layout, massing, access, and relationship to neighbouring properties, presenting options where appropriate. Once a preferred direction is agreed, we can work alongside cost consultants to sense-check the scheme against your budget.
Stage 3: Developed Design
At this stage the design is refined and tested. We develop the agreed concept into a coordinated 3D model, which forms the basis for detailed planning drawings. In particular, this helps you understand proportions, relationships, and internal spaces properly.
We often produce visual material such as walk-through films or views to help you assess how the scheme will work in practice. This stage is collaborative, with opportunities to review and adjust the design before submission.
Stage 4: Technical Design and Tender
Once you have planning permission, the focus shifts to buildability and detail. We work with you to agree fittings, finishes, and key technical decisions, recording these clearly to avoid confusion later.
We then produce comprehensive technical drawings and specifications suitable for building regulations approval and construction. Coordination with structural engineers and other consultants is included as required.
Stage 5: Construction
During construction we can act as contract administrator and RIBA certified site architect, providing regular inspections, certifying work completed, and attending site meetings. Overall, our role is to help maintain quality, manage change, and keep communication clear between all parties.
We review any proposed variations before the contractor carries them out, agreeing costs in advance where possible. As a result, this helps avoid surprises and keeps the project financially controlled.
Why this approach works
Breaking work, and the architectural design process into clear stages means you only commit to what's needed at each point. If a project needs to pause, or if priorities change, you're not locked into unnecessary commitments. It also means we can adapt our involvement to suit your needs; some clients want comprehensive support from start to finish, others prefer a lighter touch once planning permission is secured.
What remains consistent is our focus on getting things right. Our architect design process in Farnham follows this same disciplined approach on every project, coordinating planners, structural engineers, and other consultants at exactly the right time, ensuring all drawings are based on accurate information. This attention to detail during design reduces problems during construction, which ultimately saves time and money.
If you're considering a project and would like to discuss how we might help, please get in touch, or book a discovery call. The initial consultation is free, and there's no obligation to proceed beyond that first conversation.
