Project Details: Arts and Crafts House Renovation and Extension
We remodelled and extended a beautiful Arts and Crafts house in Croydon, London, transforming a cold, disconnected maze of rooms into flowing, light-filled spaces. The design prioritises visual connections throughout while preserving the building's distinctive Arts and Crafts character and architectural integrity.
This Arts and Crafts house renovation in Croydon presented an interesting dichotomy: while welcoming and characterful from the street, the interior comprised a cold, labyrinthine arrangement of rooms on different levels that lacked coherence and connection. Several spaces suffered from water ingress through a failing flat roof, requiring us to carry out comprehensive remediation. Our design approach established a clear guiding principle that all buildings and rooms should be both visually and physically connected, with each space enjoying views towards the courtyard and the beautiful established garden beyond. The first floor required extension to provide additional accommodation, but we designed the new element to remain subservient to the main house through the careful use of dormer windows that reduce the perceived mass and maintain the architectural hierarchy of the original building.
Preserving the distinctive personality and Arts and Crafts character of the house during this comprehensive renovation in Croydon demanded meticulous attention to material selection and detailing. We specified traditional materials throughout: leaded bronze casement windows echo the craftsmanship of the original construction, and soft yellow bricks complement the existing palette. Painted weatherboards add visual warmth. In addition, lime mortar was used for sympathetic repointing alongside clay roof tiles. Specifying these heritage-appropriate materials required working with specialist contractors experienced in traditional construction techniques, ensuring authentic detailing and proper installation methods. The result is a transformed Croydon home that successfully balances contemporary spatial requirements and environmental comfort with the preservation of the building's Arts and Crafts character and architectural integrity.
Architecture in Croydon, London
Croydon sits within the London Borough of Croydon, a borough with 21 designated conservation areas and a strong policy framework for protecting local architectural character. Much of the borough's suburban residential fabric is defined by interwar Arts and Crafts vernacular housing, and Croydon Council actively requires that alterations and extensions to period properties respect the character and appearance of the surrounding area. Where projects fall within or adjacent to a Local Heritage Area, planning policy requires that proposals respond to the special architectural interest of the neighbourhood. This context shaped our approach to this Arts and Crafts house renovation in Croydon throughout, informing both the design strategy and the careful specification of heritage-appropriate materials.
